(Road) Tripping for equality
by Laura Kiritsy
Editor-in-chief
Sunday Jun 8, 2008

At this past Saturday’s state Democratic convention in Lowell, among the many people we bumped into was Mr. Chris Mason, a former denizen of TakeMassAction.com, former MassEquality operative and former legislative aide to Sens. Therese Murray and Steven Panagiotakes. Mason is currently managing the legislative campaign of Jen Benson, a Lunenburg Democrat who is looking to succeed state Rep. Jamie Eldridge in the 37th Middlesex District (Eldridge is running for retiring Sen. Pam Resor’s seat). But in addition to managing Benson’s campaign -- which was recently endorsed by MassEquality -- Mason is planning a 15,000 mile road trip through the lower 48 states that he’s dubbed "Driving Equality." Mason aims to take the pulse of the LGBT nation by meeting with LGBT community organizers, activists and anyone else who’d like to talk with him.

In addition to blogging and posting videos of his journey at his website drivingequality.com, Mason plans to produce a documentary film to activate discussion around strategies for ensuring LGBT equality. Mason just rolled out the website, which details more about the trip, how you can help him out and the ways in which he’ll make it have "a net-zero impact on global warming." For the record, Mason is a committed environmentalist whose first foray into activism was founding a group that raised money for save the Amazon rainforests -- when he was just a wee lad of nine years old growing up in Lunenburg. Check out this old article -- and the cute picture of the mini- Mason in what looks like a teddy-bear sweatshirt -- in which he explained his project.

Could Mason be the gay Michael Moore? We’ll have to wait and see if he goes knocking on Rick Santorum’s door when he gets to Pennsylvania.

Let’s just hope the price of gas comes down before he hits the road, or else "Driving Equality" might become "Pedaling Equality."
