Dolly Parton: pro-marriage equality by Hannah Clay Wareham
Associate EditorMonday Nov 16, 2009 Country singer Dolly Parton came out in support of marriage equality on the "Joy Behar Show" on Friday, Nov. 13, saying, "Sure, why can’t [gays and lesbians] get married? They should suffer like the rest of us do."
Host Behar suggested that Parton’s Southern background might not lend the songstress to marriage equality, to which Parton acknowledged, "I know that’s true."
Parton also opened up to CNN’s Behar about the singer’s gay following. "I think it’s because they know I’m different too, and it took me a long time to be accepted," Parton said of her gay fan base. "Plus, a lot of my gay guy friends love to dress up ... I think they just appreciate the fact that I love everybody for who they are."
In response to a question from one of Behar’s Twitter followers concerning Houston megachurch pastor Joel Osteen (who this month said, "homosexuality is not God’s best work,") Parton laughed and said, "I don’t want to talk about him ... I think God made us who we are and how we are, and I don’t think if [Osteen] was a religious person, he would be judging people."
