Fenway’s ‘Opening Our Doors’ Festival Celebrates 25 Years of Free Art and Culture
One of Boston’s signature free arts events will mark a major milestone this fall, as Opening Our Doors celebrates 25 years on Monday, October 12, 2026, with a full day of no-cost programming at more than 20 sites across the Fenway Cultural District.
The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., anchored by a kick-off celebration on the Christian Science Plaza from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. More than 20 locations in the Fenway will offer art, music, cultural activities, and community events, all free and open to residents and visitors.
Launched in the early 2000s, Opening Our Doors grew out of a single symbolic gesture: in 1995, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston opened its Huntington Avenue entrance as an act of community connection. A few years later, that “one open door” inspired Fenway Alliance Co-Executive Director Kelly Brilliant to found the festival, which has since become one of Boston’s largest and longest-running free celebrations of art and culture.
“What began in 2001 with a dozen participating locations has grown to more than 20 participating institutions — including the Museum of Fine Arts, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Huntington Theatre, and the MassArt Art Museum — drawing more than 10,000 visitors annually,” organizers note. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has praised the event as a place where the idea that “the arts belong to everyone” and that cultural spaces across the city are “the purview of all of our young people, especially all of our families” took root.
Brilliant said she remains “amazed by how many doors across the Fenway open every October — and by how many people walk through them for the first time.” Her fellow Co-Executive Director at the Fenway Alliance, Genevieve Day, calls the 25th anniversary “a celebration of how far that open door has carried us, and an invitation for even more of Boston to walk through it.”
