Sean Alexander Fittz, 40, an interior designer and resident of the Back Bay, died unexpectedly, Tuesday, July 2.
Born in Boston, he was raised in Charlestown. After graduating from North Cambridge Catholic High School, he attended Boston University.
He began his career in the restaurant industry as a busboy at the Blue Room in Kendall Square, and over the course of a decade he worked closely with such chefs as Todd English, Barbara Lynch, Chris Schlesinger, Paul O'Connell and Stan Frankenthaler at such restaurants as Olive's, East Coast Grill, and No. Nine Park.
Fittz's work in the restaurant industry transformed into a successful career as a designer when he began helping chefs and owners first to paint and then to decorate their restaurants. For 11 years, he owned and operated Sunfish Paint and Design, working with some of the city's top designers on both commercial and residential projects, becoming a familiar face at the Design Center, and eventually focusing primarily on that aspect of his business. An explorer at heart, he traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia and North and South America, lived in Australia for a short period of time, and visited the West African nation of Ghana on a charitable mission to help small business owners.
Sean's other charitable activities were widespread, and included participating in the first Boston to New York AIDS ride and the Swim for Life in Provincetown.
Sean is survived by his mother, Mary A. ("Dolly") Hudson of Charlestown; his father, Charles W. of Albuquerque, NM; three brothers, Charles of Andover, and Joseph and Liam of Charlestown; three nephews; and a niece. Donations may be made in his memory to the Charlestown Boys and Girls Club.
