May is National Foster Care Month by Hannah Clay Wareham
Associate EditorTuesday May 11, 2010 In honor of National Foster Care Month, Jordan’s Furniture will be teaming up with the Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange (MARE) in hosting their first "A Walk Home - Walk for Adoption" on May 16.
"What makes a house feel like a home?" asked Eliot Tatelman, CEO of Jordan’s Furniture. "It’s not furniture -- it’s family," he said. "But thousands of kids living right here in Massachusetts are waiting for all the comforts of home and family."
The event will fund MARE’s work to find adoptive parents for the more than 2,000 local children and teens growing up in state foster care. MARE specializes in working with sibling groups and children who are traditionally harder to place. The organization recruits, educates, supports, and advocates for families throughout the entire adoption process. In the past 25 years, MARE has helped more than 5,400 children leave foster care for permanent families.
WBZ TV reporter Eileen Curran will lead the walk with her adopted daughter Grace. Curran called her choice to adopt "the best thing I’ve done in my entire life. ...When you adopt a child, some people will say that you ’rescued’ that child. Truth is, the child rescues you."
The event -- to be held on Sunday morning, May 16 at Jordan’s Furniture’s Taunton location -- will include indoor and outdoor non-competitive walks, activities, entertainment, and refreshments. Walk participants can register at www.firstgiving.com/mare or by contacting MARE at www.mareinc.org or (617) 54-ADOPT.
