"It was a tough campaign," Frank Schubert, campaign manager for ’Yes on 1 - Stand for Marriage Maine’ said at the Eastland Hotel in Portland, Maine, "but we feel good." Bay Windows caught up with Schubert at 1 a.m. the morning of Nov. 4.

Schubert declared victory for the campaign, which worked to ban same-sex marriage from Maine, after 20% of the state’s votes had been accounted for on the evening of Nov. 3.

Using what Schubert called "a very sophisticated computer model," the campaign was able to determine their chances of coming out on top -- nothing short of a miracle, according to the campaign manager. "The other side had more money and more volunteers...we were definitely the underdog."

Despite generous funding from the National Organization for Marriage and the Maine Catholic Diocese, ’No on 1 - Protect Maine Equality’ managed to surpass their rival’s funding during the campaign’s eleventh hour.

While mere blocks away, gay and lesbian Mainers at the ’No on 1’ election night party shed tears over the anticipated loss, Kym Souchet, a ’Yes on 1’ volunteer, rounded up her kids at the Eastland Hotel. "I’ve been working and helping out with phone calls," she said, calling the campaign a "united effort." Her whole family dedicated time and energy to the campaign; her older kids helped out at home while she and her husband volunteered.

What’s next for Schubert? "A couple of drinks," he said.

Representatives from ’No on 1’ have not yet issued a formal concession. For more ’Protect Maine Equality’ coverage, click here.
