GLAD: Future of gay marriage in Maine is bright "no matter what" by Hannah Clay Wareham
Associate EditorTuesday Nov 3, 2009 Betsy Smith, the executive director of Equality Maine, welcomes attendees on what she calls a night "on the verge of celebration." Optimism isn’t lacking in the crowd, and it’s fitting that as Smith takes the stage, the numbers in the unofficial vote count switch again, with ’No on 1’ leading with 54%.
She credits the organizations that joined ’No on 1’ in their volunteer efforts with the anticipated success.
Mary Bonauto of Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) says, "I have such gratitude for the gay families that came forward and dared to tell the truth about their lives. Without a doubt, we would not be here tonight but for that courage and that truth-telling." Bonauto goes on to list couples who have spoken out in favor of same-sex marriage in Maine, and thank the community’s straight allies. "The future is bright no matter what happens tonight," she says.
Rachel Maddow will be speaking with ’No on 1’ campaign manager Jesse Connolly momentarily. Visit www.protectmaineequality.org to watch live.
