Overcast skies and the occasional sprinkle failed to put a damper on the
15th annual Massachusetts Youth Pride celebration, which was held at the
Parkman Bandstand on Boston Common the afternoon of May 9. Between 4000 and 5000 LGBT youth and straight allies gathered for the event, traveling to Boston from a wide range of communities across the state, including Brockton, Newton, Hyannis, Fall River, Lexington, Beverly, and many others. Just as the Youth Pride rally was getting under way it began to rain, but as members of the crowd began huddling under umbrellas the festival’s emcee, drag queen Raquel Blake, told them, "It’s a little cloudy, but I think we can manage to put a little rainbow up in the sky, can’t we?" prompting cheers from the crowd. By the time the youth assembled into marching contingents for the parade the rain had stopped, and the young people marched through the streets, past the Massachusetts State House, holding banners for their school gay/straight alliances and shouting chants like, "Hey hey, ho ho, homophobia’s got to go."
