Obituary: Peter Dubuque, outdoor enthusiast who loved snowboarding
Thursday Apr 9, 2009

Peter F. Dubuque, 39, died unexpectedly and accidentally in his home in Malden on March 24, 2009. He leaves behind Steven Kleinedler, his partner of 15 years and husband of nearly five years.

Dubuque was born in 1970 in Springfield, Vermont. His family moved to Billerica when he was young. He graduated from Austin Preparatory School in 1988, and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Russian Language and Literature from Harvard University in 1992. Dubuque was employed by Harvard since 1992, most recently as a database architect in the university’s information systems group.

Dubuque was exceedingly passionate about the outdoors, photography, and politics. Although he enjoyed hiking, rafting, bicycling, and kayaking, it is snowboarding that made Dubuque’s life whole, and he traveled extensively across the continent in the winter to exercise this passion. He served as an officer with Outryders, New England’s LGBT snowboarding and skiing organization, from 2003-2005. An avid photographer, he took hundreds of panoramic and regular photographs of snowy mountainous landscapes, of wildlife, and other subjects of natural beauty across the United States and Canada. At the time of his death, he was preparing an exhibition of his work at Harvard; it will be on display later this summer.

Although quiet, Dubuque was intensely dedicated to his family, his husband, his friends, and his beliefs. He actively supported many charitable organizations, including the ACLU, the Yosemite Fund, the Point Foundation, ImprovBoston, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, among many others.

He also leaves behind his sister Kimberley Campbell of Dracut and his mother Harriet (Desmond) of Malden. He was preceded in death by his father, Gilbert.

A service commemorating his life took place at AJ Spadafora Funeral Home in Malden on March 29. Donations in his memory can be made to the Point Foundation, an organization dedicated to granting scholarships to LGBT youth, at pointfoundation.org.
