Voters close the gap in Maine by Hannah Clay Wareham
Associate EditorTuesday Nov 3, 2009 According to the Bangor Daily News, ’Yes on 1’ is now leading in the polls.
When the unofficial vote count began at 8 p.m., supporters of same-sex marriage led by almost 90%. Now, that number has dropped to 46%.
12,382 votes have been counted so far: 6,611 going to the ’Yes on 1’ campaign and 5,771 going to supporters of marriage equality in Maine.
The crowd in the State of Maine Ballroom at the Holiday Inn on the Bay in Portland, ME continues to dance and mingle. The ’No on 1’ coordinators, volunteers, and supporters know that definitive numbers won’t emerge until much later in the evening. The Awesome, the live band playing in the Ballroom, launches into their rendition of Matthew Wilder’s "Break My Stride."
