"We’re going to be prepared for anything," chief of security Scott King ("not queen!") says outside of the State of Maine Ballroom at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland, Maine. "We’re making sure nothing goes down."

So far, the only thing going down (or getting down) is the cover band, The Awesome, and the dancers already cutting the rug.

The dance floor is dominated by six teens from Yarmouth High. They’ve spent the day canvassing door-to-door for ’No on 1’ and are excited to finally let loose. Many of the group aren’t yet old enough to vote. They participated in the campaign because, as one of the girls puts it, "My best friend’s gay," and points to Evan.

Evan Dunn, 17, the president of his school’s Gay Straight Alliance, is surrounded by allies: Jackson Lee, 18, Madoline Mahoney, 17, Natalie Aiken, 18 (yes, she’s related to Clay), Iris Gwynne, 17, and Lani Geistwalker, 16.

They’re not sure what’s going to happen tonight, but they know it’s going to be big. "They have a cake in there, so something’s going on," Lee says.
