Cambridge mayor tied the knot on Sunday by Sue O’Connell
co-publisherFriday Aug 28, 2009 The country’s first openly lesbian mayor Denise Simmons married Mattie B. Hayes Sunday at Saint Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church.
Reverend Irene Monroe officiated the ceremony, which has been reported to be the first same-sex marriage ceremony held in a predominantly African-American church in Cambridge. "We had love, and now we have that legal document as well," Simmons told the Harvard Crimson.
