Coakley supports DOMA challenge by Ethan Jacobs
associate editorTuesday Mar 3, 2009 I just returned from the GLAD press conference announcing their federal lawsuit challenging section three of DOMA, and at the conference they announced that the suit has a very high profile local supporter. GLAD distributed a statement by Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley announcing her support for the suit. It can’t hurt GLAD to have the backing of the state’s top lawyer.
Here’s an excerpt from Coakley’s statement:
Today’s lawsuit describes compelling stories of individuals in committed, loving, and lasting relationships, who have been deprived of rights and protections that they rightfully deserve. They are simply seeking the legal protections given to all other married persons. Massachusetts sees no reason to view these couples in any other way than as married couples, and we hope that this lawsuit results in a similar outlook at the federal level.
