Goodridges file for divorce by Laura Kiritsy
Editor-in-chiefTuesday Feb 3, 2009 Hillary and Julie Goodridge have filed for divorce, the Boston Herald is reporting this morning. As if divorcing isn’t hard enough for the couple whose name is on the state’s historic marriage equality lawsuit, how about having the Herald break the news - with a nice dose of snark like this?
The Jamaica Plain lesbians whose passionate love led to the groundbreaking legalization of same-sex marriage in Massachusetts have called it quits and filed for divorce, the Herald has learned.
But one-time international gay icons Hillary and Julie Goodridge, who share custody of their 12-year-old daughter, Annie, are less eager to be poster partners for gay divorce.
Ouch!
And it’s always nice to have resident homophobe Kris Mineau of the Mass. Family Institute to comment publicly on your relationships woes - going so far as to blame the Goodridges for causing "pain" to the state and the nation with their successful effort "to redefine marriage."
But to our minds, there’s must be nothing worse than having your 82-year-old mom opining from Florida on your marital implosion, as Hillary Goodridge’s was in the Herald:
I wish I could talk them into staying together, but I don’t see how. They had a great thing going. I love Julie, and I always will," said Hillary’s mom, Ann Kiernan Smith, 82, of Florida, who believed the couple would outlast their critics.
I’m sure Julie Goodridge was happy to hear that her soon-to-be ex-mother-in-law still loves her, so that’s something.
Hillary and Julie Goodridge separated back in 2006. Despite the Herald’s assertion about the women not wanting to be "poster partners for gay divorce," they have actually modeled what a successful separation and divorce might look like -- by staying out of the news, for instance -- unlike messily divorcing heterosexuals such as Britney and KFed, Madonna and Guy, and Paul McCartney and Heather Mills.
We wish nothing but the best for Hillary and Julie Goodridge and their 12-year-old daughter, Annie.
