Boston Pride clarifies designation of official event guide of Boston Pride by Laura Kiritsy
Editor-in-chiefThursday Jun 5, 2008 Recently, you may have picked up a 2008 Pride Guide stamped "The official guide to Boston Pride." Don’t be fooled, people!
If it doesn’t say Bay Windows, it ain’t official.
Now, if you’re just perusing the guide to try to find where the block party is or what time the Pridelights ceremony starts, it doesn’t make one lick of difference if you’re flipping through Bay Windows Official Event Guide to Boston Pride or a lesser impostor. I’m just sayin.’
But for those of you who care about good business practice and like to support businesses that support the LGBT community, just know that "official" affiliation with Boston Pride is based on a contractual agreement between the Pride Committee and whoever they’re doing business with, in this case the publishers of Bay Windows, Jeff Coakley and Sue O’Connell. Coakley and O’Connell earned "official" Boston Pride sponsorship status by agreeing to share revenue from advertising sales to the guide with the Committee. And the revenue the committee gets goes to make Boston Pride fun and fabulous for you. Any other guide claiming to be "official" is basically ripping off the Pride Committee and in effect, ripping you off.
That’s why the Boston Pride Committee today released a statement clarifying that their seal of approval has been given to Bay Windows. Here is the statement that Boston Pride Committee President Linda DeMarco delivered to our office today:
The Boston Pride Committee clarifies that there is one Official Event Guide to Boston Pride designated for the 2008 Pride season. Produced by Bay Windows, this Event Guide is the only one Boston Pride Guide as "official" by the Boston Pride Committee.
The official guide designation is in addition to media sponsorships established with several New England-based media outlets.
The Boston Pride Committee is proud to work in conjunction with each of these media partners to celebrate the rich tradition of New England’s gay lesbian, bisexual and transgender community.
Happy Pride!
