Season’s greetings from HRC and BitchFriday Dec 21, 2007 It’s a bit of an understatement to say that the Human Rights Campaign’s (HRC) relationship with the transgender community is a bit strained at the moment. After HRC’s flip-flop on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (first they opposed any version of the bill without gender identity protections, then they reversed course and supported an ENDA bill covering only sexual orientation), the organization’s lone out trans board member, Donna Rose, resigned in protest, and a number of transgender and other LGBT activists accused HRC of throwing the trans community under the bus.
HRC’s holiday card, a copy of which came to Bay Windows, probably won’t help matters much.
Among all the little photos included on the card, which join together to form the HRC equals sign, is one of L-Word actress Daniela Sea and her partner, musician and political lightening rod Bitch.
Rightly or wrongly, Bitch has become a controversial figure in the trans community for her decision to perform at the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival, which bars transgender women from attending, and her public statements in support of the organizers’ right to exclude transwomen. This past summer the Boston Dyke March committee pulled Bitch from the event’s line-up after complaints from some attendees that her presence would create a hostile atmosphere for transgender attendees.
Maybe Bitch wasn’t the right choice to include on the holiday card this year, guys.
