Mystery novelist Robert Parker dies at 77 by Hannah Clay Wareham
Associate EditorTuesday Jan 19, 2010 Mystery novelist Robert Parker, author of the popular "Spenser" series about a Boston private investigator, died Monday, Jan. 18 at his home in Cambridge, of natural causes. He was 77. The Associated Press reported that the writer was found sitting at his desk.
Aside from his literary legacy -- which includes more than 50 titles -- Parker also leaves behind a history of loyalty to the Boston-area LGBT community. Parker and his wife Joan have long been involved with the Boston chapter of Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) and the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts (AAC).
"We are truly saddened by the death of our beloved friend and supporter Robert Parker, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his family," Rebecca Haag, president and CEO of the AAC, said. "Robert and his wife Joan have been loyal friends and supporters of people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS from the very beginning of the epidemic. His books reflected his love of the City of Boston and its residents and his compassion for those who face special challenges in life. Our community mourns his passing.
"Robert and Joan’s association with the AIDS Action Committee dates back to the early 1990’s when he and his wife participated in AIDS Walk Boston, highlighting the idea that HIV and AIDS touches us all. In recent years he became an active patron in ARTcetera, AIDS Action’s biennial art auction. As recently as this past year, he and Joan made a gift towards a fund which will be used to acknowledge Bernie Toale and the generous support of Boston’s arts community. The tribute will be located at our new offices at 75 Amory Street. The AIDS Action family will miss his loyalty and commitment, and extend our sympathies to his family, his many friends throughout the greater Boston area and his legions of dedicated fans."
Throughout his career, Parker also made it a point to include several diverse characters in his books -- including gay characters.
