Boston to mark Transgender Day of Remembrance by Hannah Clay Wareham
Associate EditorMonday Nov 9, 2009 Boston residents will be remembered Friday, Nov. 20, in Allston, as the LGBT community gathers in honor of the worldwide Transgender Day of Remembrance.
Chanelle Pickett, Debra Forte, Monique Thomas, and Rita Hester are merely four of the many Boston residents who were violently murdered because of their transgender identity. To honor their memories, vigil and community speak-out will be held at St. Luke’s and St. Margaret’s church in Allston at 7 p.m.
Since last year’s event, eighteen people are known to have been murdered because of their gender identity or expression.
"No persons should be subjected to violence simply because of their gender identity or expression," a statement from the all-volunteer committee behind Boston’s Transgender Day of Remembrance read. "No persons should be denied the basic rights that enable their safety and security. Please join with us on this day to remember our dead, whatever the cause of their departure."
Boston’s LGBT community and all allies are welcome to enjoy a non-worship, non-denominational evening of speakers, hot drinks, and homemade baked goods.
The free event will benefit the Transgender Emergency Fund, which provides assistance to low-income transgender people. Sponsors of the event include the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition, the Boston Alliance of GLBT Youth, TransCEND, Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, Bay Windows, the Tiffany Club of New England, Fenway Community Health Center, AIDS Action of Boston, and the Network/La Red.
