Everybody lies. Elected officials and politicians seem to be masters at deception—able to omit inconvenient truths, ignore facts, spin bad news into good. Then there’s Mitt Romney. As a Massachusetts candidate (for governor and senator), Romney presented himself as a supporter of gay and lesbian equal rights. Presidential candidate Romney, however, seems to have shed the skin of the old Romney, leaving his fundamental beliefs on fairness along the road to the White House.
Whether you are concerned or unconcerned about gay rights is not the issue. Romney’s ability to transform himself so dramatically is. This should give you pause come November. People, and candidates, do change their minds. Leaders should listen to dissenting opinions. Romney’s change, however, is an abandonment of our community motivated by political ambition rather than thoughtful consideration. That Romney so easily turned his back on civil rights for political gain is downright disturbing.
Over the past decade the Bay Windows staff has carefully documented Romney’s twists of the truth regarding his gay history. We’ve packaged many articles at www.baywindows.com and called them The Romney Files. Many readers have asked that we re-publish The Files in print. We are happy to oblige. Here are just a few of the many.
