It's been two years since same-sex couples began being able to wed in the nation's capital. 

Friday, March 9 marked two years since a new law enabled gay and lesbian couples to begin marrying in the District of Columbia. 

A spokeswoman for the D.C. Superior Court says approximately 5,700 gay and straight couples applied to marry between March 2011 and March 2012. That's compared with 6,600 in the first year same-sex marriage was legal and 3,100 the year before when only heterosexual couples were allowed to marry in the city.
