PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox has married his longtime partner in a private ceremony in his Statehouse office.
The Providence Journal reports that Fox and Marcus LaFond were married Tuesday by Traffic Court Chief Magistrate William Guglietta.
Fox said in a statement to the newspaper he and LaFond chose the day because it’s the anniversary of the day 15 years ago when they exchanged rings in a commitment ceremony.
Rhode Island legislators approved same-sex marriage earlier this year. The law took effect Aug. 1.
Fox said he and LaFond have been asked why they didn’t get married out-of-state. Fox said he wanted “this special day to take place in the state we both treasure so dearly.”
He said he can’t help but reflect on “all the courageous individuals” who fought for marriage equality.
