Organization to continue its community work
The LGBT Coalition of Western Massachusetts' Executive Director Suzanne Seymour is stepping down after being with the organization since 2009. The Coalition is committed to improving and preserving the wellbeing of the LGBTQ community through advocacy and outreach.
"Suzanne Seymour has been an untiring leader of the Coalition during its formative years," said Emily Scagel, Assistant Director. "Under her leadership, the Coalition has established itself as an integral part of the local LGBT community and she has paved the way for continued future success."
During Seymour's tenure with the organization, she has impacted the lives of many within the local LGBT community through the Coalition's events and programming. She has helped LGBT youth create safe spaces at school and in their homes through the Coalition's organizing of National GSA Day and workshops for parents and allies of LGBT youth. Seymour also organized the annual Rainbow Riverfest as a celebration of Pride in the community.
Most recently, Seymour was a voice against workplace discrimination toward transgender women. Through a grant program funded by the Women's Fund of Western Massachusetts, the Coalition worked to increase the employment opportunities for transgender women through workplace diversity trainings for local employers and interview workshops for transgender women.
"I am honored to have served our community in this capacity," commented Seymour. "I look forward to the future opportunities life offers me and feel confident in the leadership of its new director to take the Coalition to the next level."
Seymour will remain involved with the Coalition's advisory board. Ashley Mark, Director of Communications, has been named the Interim Director. Mark, a member of the Board of Directors, holds an MBA in Management and will bring fresh vision and new leadership to the Coalition's community work.
"Suzanne is an inspiration and her passion for our LGBT community has given the Coalition its momentum," Mark commented. "I intend to continue that momentum through a revitalization of our mission and new, innovative programming for our community. It is an honor to continue in her footsteps."
The Coalition is actively seeking new members for the Board of Directors. For more information and to submit an application, please visit the website at lgbtcoalitionwma.org.
