Thank you for your coverage of the issue of transgender health care (see “Transgender Medical Research and Provider Education Lacking,” Jan. 2). More research and provider education around health care for transgender people is clearly needed. At The Fenway Institute and Fenway Health we are tackling this issue in several ways:
Through The National LGBT Health Education Center at The Fenway Institute, we conduct trainings at medical schools and community health care centers around the country in the provision of culturally competent care for transgender and gender variant people. We also provide webinars on transgender care for health care providers, and publish white papers and manuals on transgender health care that inform providers and policymakers alike.
At Fenway Health, we provide primary medical and mental health care, and supportive services, that are sensitive to the needs of people who identify on the transgender spectrum. Our Transgender Health Program ensures the delivery of quality and informed care for trans women, trans men, gender-queer, affirmed men and women, and others who have health care needs unique to gender expressions and identities that may vary from societally imposed expectations or norms.
Much progress needs to be made in order to close the disparities in health experienced by transgender people. In addition to research, access to health, and provider training, it is going to take on-going public discussion and education to create change. We encourage you to continue your coverage of these important issues.
