Elton John has paid tribute to movie icon and AIDS activist Elizabeth Taylor by dedicating a song to her at his concert at Pittsburgh’s Consol Energy Center.

The gay rocker is also active in AIDS awareness and said during the March 23 concert that it was "a sad day because today I lost a friend and you lost a hero."

In Live Nation video supplied to WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh, John says Taylor "stood up when no one was prepared to stand up and be counted against AIDS. She supported everybody in that with 1,000 percent of her body and her fiber."

John played "Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me" after saying, "God bless you, Elizabeth. God knows how we’re going to replace you. This is for you and your beautiful memory and for all of the people you helped and saved."
